One of the first things that you should be doing when you take a vacation to gran canaria is a helicopter ride, even though the ride only lasts for 30 minutes it should let you get an idea of where the islands are located and the sites that you should visit. It would allow you to plan your first day and decide upon the areas you would like to visit from the ground.

Just sit out over these places and enjoy the view!
